If you want to continue using WhatsApp in 2017 you may have to upgrade your phone.

Millions of users of the messaging platform could face being unable to contact their family and friends via the app over the festive period as the company looks to upgrade their software.

WhatsApp has over a billion users worldwide and to keep with the pace of changing technology it has to phase out compatibility with older phones.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp said: “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”

The company has set a deadline of the end of 2016 for several older services that will no longer be supported.
